Super highway of Life

Recently my friend came back from abroad, excited to be back home and hoping to catch up with all his friends and family. You must realize that being out of your home country for about four years or more, you will find Kenyans have moved on with their lives beyond where you left them. Sometimes, it is even difficult to find them on the same mobile number, leave alone where they stayed or worked. Kenyans really move on so fast!. All you need is to go to shags for a couple of months and then come back to Nai you would wonder if you are in the same side of the country you were before you left. Well , in as much as it is good for guys to move on, I just wonder, a little bit, where are people moving on to? that we do not get in touch with family and friends who came back recently. I remember during the days when I was a teen and junior adult-a returnee from whichever abroad (even India) would be idolized and sometime given some "while you were away"orientation and everyone would want you to have lunch with you (of course some hoped you had some dollars to swing their directions), who just wanted you to feel welcome back-home- was appropriate and African. Now my buddy could not even get three or four people to let him know that it was nice to know that he is back, or " when are you going back" "are you settling in or.. " or just a simple gesture like "hey what's next?" Unfortunately, in as much as he had let all the guys who cared for him those days that he was coming back with his family none saw him at the port of entry. I wonder how many of the friends said anything beyond-Karibu!(in text message) Of course his family was shocked to see the superhighway and the new development that Kenya has taken in the recent past, and as excited as this was-they were equally excited, negatively, that no one is friendly anymore-believers especially! Him being one. So two things that keep me here still writing. Was my buddy expecting too much from us,? Or actually these were not friends at all, and all it needed was a couple of years, physical absence from each other, , despite these days of email, video skyping, facebooking,to measure it. -guys can still afford to be strangers? I wonder! My second thought is-are we really that busy or focussed and have no time for the next guy who is smiling at us? When did we actually get so focussed on these things that we forgot the power of welcoming "strangers" back home? Today I called someone with whom we had not talked for ages, and I enjoyed just hearing their voice. I knew we are still friends, after we talked for a while, we agreed that lunch is in order in a week's time, despite our busy schedule. No business talk, just talk about life's path. Can't we find a lunch or an honest coffee time, just to catch up with each others life. -------------- My Kids thots: In the morning my kids take forever to do anything, waking up, dressing, eating and anything that they need to do to go to school. Amazingly they both love school, more than I did in all my years in life. So dislike of school is not an excuse. Both my wife and I have used every trick known in the parent 101 manual but nothing, they just dont move as fast. Last week, I offered to allow them to watch one of their favourite kids movie if they finished quickly,-in 10 minutes they were both ready, I mean 10 minutes! world class record.Amazing!!! What that a bribe or motivation? My kids made me think! Posted 14th March 2012 by levittg .

In as much as I support the sharing of opportunity between men and women, I think some things might just be going round and round and soon get off the handle. I pray that as a man, I will not have to raise my hand, ever to hit my wife or any woman, beside my daughter-who I will only discipline through the cane of discipline-Because i think its barbaric and unintelligence, on the part of the man. I have a daughter and a son who adore me as if I were a god. And in as much as I would like to maintain that for G, one thing I know is vital to mantain status quo-is how I handle their mother really matters. Will I be counted as the "Dad in a million" when my children are accorded all the accolades in their autobiography, or will they say "my mother is my hero " as we are all used to hear! Would my children ever since about Daddy, like Boys to Men, or like Tupac among others who had nothing nice to say about Daddy. I hope this will stay, my son once said: "Papa I am sorry that you did not have as good parents as we have" Posted 24th February 2012 by levittg.

Parentless Homes!

I look at myself and reflecting on my past, I have had many reason to say that my parents could have done better. Yet again, adjusting the lens of clarity and looking closely at what they were able to accomplish with the little accessibility to resources, I must say my parents are the greatest parents on this greener side of sahara. I thank the Almighty God and all his angel for breathe and guarding me everyday despite my dangerous little life, yet making sure that I have reached this point where I can confidently say "Count my blessing and name one by one" Lately, as I have recollected on what comprises what I consider "my calling" or purpose-be it religiously or just humanly, filming of documentaries has overtaken all the passions that I previously shouted from the depth of my lungs. I am fully convinced that docus have more power than a every Sunday sermon at the pulpit, without belittling its power. The shelf life is just amazing! As I research and do one more piece of documentary, I am fully convinced that life is not as pathetic as I earlier thought. It has its various ups and several downs, yet if we pull together we could actually meet somewhere in the middle. Africa has obviously and definitely been baptized, eternally, as the dying continent. Well 'Dead' sounds somehow harsh, but, if anything comes out of the continent might just as well be dead than alive. Be it, poverty, sickness, hunger, corruption, massacre, dictatorship, do I need to continue? The list is endless, all negative! Well that is totally true that Africa is patched with all those vices and more, however there many positive and beautiful things and people and activities and characters that dwell in this continent that have not being sung! In the midst of all the challenges that seem to blanket the continent of Africa, there are children of between age 6 to 12 who are taking care of their little siblings every day, as if their were the parents. Child-Led homestead! Yes a six years old boy (yes boy!) providing food, shelter, cleaning, dressing, well, taking care of 2 little siblings and at the same time attending school and making sure that he tops others in school. Finally he graduated with upper class at the university, despite the challenges. Now that is a positive story. Now, that is a worthy telling story and shouting from the top of our voices. Many question are been asked. why? where are the parents, where does he get food etc? I am in the research period of my documentary stories and I would be able to answer all these questions and more about the children of Africa who are parents while they are still children.
